TIC helps bring home an extra special delivery
About to return home from the Turks and Caicos, Terry and Patricia* found themselves making a detour from the airport to a local hospital. Patricia, who was nearly seven months pregnant, was feeling ill and decided to get checked out.
Her condition was serious enough that she had to have an emergency C-section. While mother and son made it through the operation fine, preemie Joshua* needed neonatal care. With no suitable facilities on the Caribbean island, he would need to be transferred to the nearest neonatal intensive care unit.
TIC found one of the few air ambulance companies equipped with neonatal units and helped arrange for Joshua's transfer. First he was taken to a hospital in Florida, then when he was stable enough, to one with neonatal facilities in his parents' hometown.
To ensure Joshua always received the best care and that the focus remained on what was important, we set up direct billing with the US hospital and obtained medical records for him and his mom. In addition, we made sure doctors on both sides of the border had the patients' medical information before their arrival so their follow up care would transition smoothly.
Throughout the process, Juliene Lima, Case Manager, kept in close touch with Terry and Patricia.
"I spoke with Terry daily, updating him on his wife's progress in Turks and Caicos. I asked him regularly about how he and Joshua were doing and passed this information on to Patricia. I also gave her emotional support while she was separated from her new family."
This kind of care and concern for travellers is common at TIC. Making that personal connection really helps reassure them that we will be there to help them get through travel situations they might face.
"It was a privilege to help this family and hear firsthand about their milestones," says Juliene. "What I'll remember most is hearing about the first time Terry was finally able to hold Joshua and feeling good knowing I was a part of making that happen."
